Nice, I liked the slower version better but I still love the message behind the song.

A note on the gov did nothing bit at the start, MICHAEL DID IT SO MUCH BETTER, on that recording its just a straight rock beat whereas when Michael did it it was all crazy syncopated groovy roll things.

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

God question Dale. What I've done is I've gone and found a good thread over in the old forum to bring some links over here for you. This is a good shot of the setup as it was last year.

And these posts have some good rich detail.

No pedal in the world will do what a nicely overdriven valve amp like that one in the clip will do. The pedals sure do help though. Exactly which one(s)? I'd be guessing. default/smile

Re: does anyone have a picture of johns pedalboard

Hi guys!
Each of John's guitars has two pickup systems with separate outputs. The 2 Maton 12-strings are fitted with Seymour Duncan Mag-Mic soundhole pickups, but he doesn’t use the microphone, only the magnetic part with the Maton APMic pickups, which combine an under-saddle component with a soundhole mic.
The lap-steels are fitted with Fishman Rare Earth Blend soundhole pickups that have both a magnetic pickup and a microphone with individual outputs for each. So, in both cases, there are separate signals for the magnetic pickups and the non-magnetic pickups.

The signal from the magnetic pickups is routed through a heap of effects, a Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive (the yellow one), a Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe (the black one with Intensity and Speed), a Boss RV-2 Digital Reverb (the black one), a Dunlop CryBaby 535Q wah, and an Akai Head Rush E2 delay (the blue one) into an Avalon U5 instrument DI/preamp.
The signal from the non-magnetic pickups is routed directly to an Avalon M5 microphone preamp. Then, the outputs from the Avalons are combined using a Midas XL42 mixer, and the mono signal is sent to a JLM Audio custom master volume/mute/ phase switch box, before going to the house console. That’s John's acoustic sound.

He also takes a feed from the Avalon U5, which goes into an Ibanez TS9DX Tube Screamer and an Ernie Ball volume pedal, before being sent to the Marshall. That’s his electric sound. He uses the volume pedal to blend the electric tone with the acoustic sound. The only things that change when he records are that the Marshall goes into another room, the signal from the Avalon M5 is routed to yet another amp for an amplified clean sound, and he puts mics on the guitar, as well. That gives him lots of different signals to work with.

Except the tuner, that's all. (I think...)

EDIT:

The chain that I described in my last post is that which John currently uses.
Before, each guitar had a Sunrise soundhole pickup, a Maton piezo pickup, and a Maton internal mic. He used a Fishman Pocket Blender preamp to mix all the signals. He plugged the piezo and mic signals straight into the Blender, and the Sunrise pickup went through a series of pedals, Boss ODB-3 Bass OverDrive, a Boss HR-2 Harmonist (The blue Boss pedal which can be seen in some pictures), a Boss Digital Reverb/Delay, a CryBaby wah, and then into the Blender. That blend of tones went to the house. Then he took the Sunrise signal out of the back of the Blender and put it through an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer, an Ernie Ball volume pedal, and, finally, into a 1975 Marshall JMP Super Lead with a 4x12 cab.

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

WOW!! I understand how it all works but not what everything is haha. So i take its near impossible to get that kind of sound with just a normal overdrive pedal? Im not really switched on with effects haha. when you turn the effects button on do you change the sound up and down with the wah pedal?

Thanks for that its real interesting!

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

No worries. There's a kind of alchemy involved. I don't understand it all either but with gain you can transform the nature of the flow of electricity. Turn up the signal strength (gain) and you open up the overtones and the sound becomes more complex.

The silver pedal on the right is the one that is used for volume control or gain if you like. The Wah can be used in a similar way but it will transform the tone and not the volume so much. All sorts of desirable effects will come from manipulating the signal characteristics.

You might find a fuzz pedal does a fair job and you can use the guitar's volume pots in the same way as a volume pedal is used. Go in to a shop and try out the fuzz pedals. Try and have the sales person plug in to an amp just like the one you want to use. See how that goes.

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

true cheers heaps aye. i just searched how to set up my AP5 pickup properly and and factory settings with a few minor adjustments of my own make it sound ssoooo much better:)

oh one more thing whilst on pedals, ive got a jimi hendrix wah pedal and when i turn the wah on, just before the heel is fully to the floor and when i bring it back up past the same spot it gets a really bad scratching type sound, almost like when the tv goes onto the black and white wrong channel haha. its only in that one spot. Would you no anything about that?? all I can think it could be is that its an electric wah ? thanks .

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

Yeah, cool champ. Good to see you getting somewhere. That sounds like your pot is dirty. They do wear out so they will need to be replaced every now and again. You can buy them from most music shops. When dust works its way into the pot it will cover the face of the semiconductor insulating that section of the pot. You can buy a product that cleans and lubricates potentiometers, pots, and that might get you out of trouble. It comes in an aerosol can.

There are actually a few types. One is called CO2 cleaner which will remove the dust but won't lubricate the pot. I need some of that myself. Been putting it off. Tandy or dick smith or jaycar or even an electeical wholesaler should have some. Ask for the cleaner and lubricant variety I think. Remember it might not fix it if the pot is too badly gone. The cleaner will come in handy anyway. A can will cost around $17.00 Australian. Good luck with it.

ive got a this stuff called venom spiritual cleaner, its for cleaning nitro rc cars,  it says its for bearings, electrics, nitro motors and any dirty objects. its safe with plastics but not with rubber seals. hmmmm decisions decisions haha.

i take it the pot is the round metal bit thats connected to the jaggered cogs??

Re: Wrong Way... (new version)

Don't do it Dale!! Unless it is the right product the thing might be ruined. Save that stuff for the RCs. And, Yep you got the pot. Not too hard to access through the base. Give it a good squirt and turn away. Do that a couple of times and then have a listen for the fault. If it is still there but lessened, do it all again till you're happy with it. Fingers crossed.

By the way Dale, this sort of stuff is better off down in the jam room so in future it might be better to take it down there.
